Temples and Monasteries

Taksang (Tiger Nest)

Fortresses, monasteries and temples are a real relic of Bhutan and her people. These structures actually display the true attributes of a Buddhist nation. Wherever you go you will find a lot of monasteries and temples, and a fortress each in every district. They are the repositories of Bhutan’s cultural and traditional heritage. The architecture of the structures is drawn upon the teachings of the Buddha and their significance. The strategic locations of the structures have their own significance including defense, sanctity of the place and to ward off harmful spirits.

Most of the fortresses and monasteries have the statues of the Bhuddha, Guru Rinpoche (2nd Buddha) and Zhadrung Ngawang Namgyal (who unified Bhutan). They are often referred to as three jewels of Bhutan.
