Bhutan Rhododendron Tours

Rhododendron is a celebrated flower in Bhutan. It is a symbol of beauty and purity. Romantic songs compare a woman’s beauty to this exquisite alpine flower. Bhutan has about 50 species of rhododendrons of about 1000 species said to be in the world. The rhododendrons are usually found at altitudes of 1,200 to 4,800 meters while some are found even in higher altitudes.

Of the species in Bhutan, six are endemic to Bhutan – Rhododendron pogonophyllum, Rhododendron bhutanense, Rhododendron flinckii, Rhododendron khochiivar, Rhododendron hodgsonii and Rhododendron kesangiae, named after the Great Royal Gand mother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. Rhododendron kesangiae is also considered to be the national Rhododendron of Bhutan.

In 2002, to commemorate the Year of the Mountains, Bhutan opened a 22-hecter-rhododendron garden at the Phrumsengla National Park, which covers central and eastern Bhutan. Bhutan also hosts the annual Rhododendron Festival at the Lamperi Royal Bhutanical Garden in Thimphu in spring and the festival exhibits about 31 species of rhododendron.
