Nepal is the land of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. It borders India to the east, west and south and China to the north. Nepal was the last Hindu kingdom in the world until 2008 when the monarchy was abolished and it was declared a republic. Located in the Himalayas, Nepal has eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains. It is no wonder that Nepal is one of the most popular travel destinations for mountaineering and adventure tourism.

Nepal is famous as the birthplace of Lord Buddha who was born in Lumbini in southern Nepal. As such, Buddhism and Hinduism are two very popular tourist attractions. Nepal boasts of many Buddhist and Hindu heritage sites.

Nepal is also popular for adventure tourism like mountain climbing, rock climbing, biking, bungee jumping, trekking and hiking, rafting, kayaking and canoeing, paragliding and hot air ballooning. As a country rich in its natural environment, it is also a popular destination for nature tourism like bird watching, butterfly tourism and jungle safaris.

The capital city of Kathmandu is a major attraction. There are several other centuries old monuments all around the city. Apart from Kathmandu, the cities of Bhaktapur and Patan have always served as the three royal cities in Nepal and these cities are also major tourist attractions.

The city of Bhaktapur is along the old trade route to Tibet which today lies just out of Kathmandu. The city has predominantly Hindu population. A major attraction in the city is the Durbar Square which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bodhnath Stupa just out of Kathmandu is also a major Buddhist attraction.

The city of Pokhara is also a major tourist attraction. It is about 200 km away from Kathmandu and is known as oneof the most beautiful places in Nepal. Pokhara is surrounded by some highest mountains in the world namely Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna I. As such, trekkers normally go to Pokhara and then head on to their onward trekking destinations. Even otherwise, Pokhara is a beautiful city.

The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini, is also a popular destination. It is located about 250km away from Kathmandu. It is a pilgrimage town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Chitwan National Park is also a major wildlife attraction. This park is popular for some of the most rare flora and fauna in the world. Some rare animals include the Bengal tigers, leopards, rhinos, sloth bears, gaur (buffalo), deer and many others. There are more than 500 species of birds in the park making it a birdwatchers dream.
